Environment Image Nodes manipulate environment maps (also known as HDRI spherical panoramas) in various ways.  The following illustration shows a simple example where environment nodes have been used to create a shiny surface.

Description

Convert Environment (Pro/Studio)

Converts environment maps between common environment map types.

Diffuse Environment (Pro/Studio)

Diffuses an environment map in such a way that it will create the impression of a diffuse material when it is reflected off a surface.

Exposure

Modifies the brightness of an environment map or other image in a way that is equivalent to having originally photographed it with different camera settings.

Make Environment

Creates an environment map in latitude/longitude format.

Reflect Environment

Reflects an environment map off a 3D surface defined by a height map.

Refract Environment (Pro/Studio)

Refracts an environment map through a 3D surface defined by a height map.  This is equivalent to observing the environment through a transparent medium, such as water.

Rotate Environment (Pro/Studio)

Rotates an environment map in a way that is equivalent to having originally swiveled the camera before photographing it.

Scatter Environment (Pro/Studio)

Partially diffuses an environment map in a way that will create the impression of a material that partially scatters light when it is reflected off a surface.
